IGNOU targets 3.5 m students, to start 2 more centres in UP

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has set a target of enrolling 3.5 million students by the end of the 11th Five Year Plan.

“The increase will make our student base represent 40 per cent of students enrolled in higher education/tertiary education system of the country,” said D K Choudhry, IGNOU Pro Vice-Chancellor.

At present, there are 18 lakh students who have enrolled with the open university, representing 17.5 per cent of the students pursuing higher education in India.

BHU to introduce Babu Jagjivan Ram chair

Varanasi: A new chair in the name of Babu Jagjivan Ram will be introduced in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) on Monday.

A BHU spokesperson announced that the chair will be inaugurated by Meera Kumar, Union Minister and daughter of Jagjivan Ram.

The centre will run under the joint collaboration of the Union Ministry for Social Empowerment and BHU.

It aims at promoting studies based on the thoughts of Babu Jagjivan Ram who was a student of the varsity.

Kalam to join BHU as visiting professor

Varanasi, (PTI): Former President A P J Abdul Kalam is all set to join Banaras Hindu University as a visiting professor in the faculty of science soon.

Disclosing this in the academic council meeting of the BHU, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Singh, announced that the former president has given his consent to join BHU as a visiting professor in the science faculty and work on "knowledge system" and "knowledge prudence".

He, however, also clarified that Kalam is yet to announce his schedule for joining the university.

UB and BHU sign exchange programme

New York: The University at Buffalo (UB) has signed an agreement with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to establish a comprehensive exchange programme between the two. UB President John B Simpson and Professor Panjab Singh, vice-chancellor, BHU signed the agreement at a formal ceremony held in the varsity premises. Prof. Singh is on a two-day visit to the varsity.

Academic delegation from Switzerland visits BHU

Varanasi, Sept 25: Terming the Indian scientific community as the core in the progress of India, Switzerland considers it as a priority country for establishing collaborations for scientific and technological research.

"India is a priority country for Switzerland for establishing scientific and technological partnership," Dr Naukakis, chairman of the two-member delegation visiting Banaras Hindu University said yesterday.

The delegation is on a visit to establish bilateral academic exchange programme between India and Switzerland.

Indian university bans soft drinks on campus

The soft drinks will not be allowed on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus in Varanasi from August 1, 2007. BHU has placed a ban on Coke and Pepsi on campus. This decision was taken by the BHU administration on 1st August.

Although, some people opposed the ban, but everybody agreed that cold/soft drinks are not good in any way. The Mehdiganj movement (against Coca-Cola) is getting strengthened gradually. Congratualtions to all colleagues (for your support to the movement).'
